The Węgorzewo County is situated in the north-east part of Warmia and Masury Province next to the country border with Russian Federation (Kaliningrad District).
This is also an external borderline of EU after Poland has joined it and moreover it is a great importance in international contacts with the East. We can be the mediator in the development of the industrial relationships with Kaliningrad District (Russian Federation) and Rowne District (Ukraine), which is realized by signing the international cooperation contracts.
The Węgorzewo County has signed such contracts with Tcherniachowsk Region (Kaliningrad District), Oziersk Region (Kaliningrad District), Jaworow Region (Ukraine), Prawdinsk Region (Kaliningrad District) and with Vilnius Region (Lithuania).

The seat of the Wegorzewo County local authorities is Węgorzewo town lain 15 kilometers away from the country border (with Russia Federation) , 280 km from Warsaw (the capital of the country), and 115 km from Olsztyn (the capital of Warmia and Mazury Province. The country consists of 693 km2. 34 % of the county area is covered by the lakes and forests. From the geographical point of view węgorzewo County lies on the territory of the Great Masurian Lakes (the southern part) and Węgorapa Land (the nothern part).
The small part of the north-west part of the country belongs to the Old Prussian Plain.
Węgorzewo county is the part of Mazurian Land, fascinating land situated in the lake district zone of the north-west part of Polandcalled by the ecologists „The Green Lungs of Poland”. The Mamry Lake, after Sniardwy Lake is the 2nd largest lake complex in Poland (10450 ha). It consistshe group of lakes : Kisajno, Dargin, Łabap, Dobskie, Kirsajty, North Mamry and Swiecajty and stretches from Giżycko all the way to Węgorzewo. There are over 30 islands on the lake, with a total area of 239 ha. Most of these islands are nature's reserves, inhabiting many species of birds such a cormorants and the grey egrets population on the High Ostrow on the Dobskie lake.
The lakes are also the fishermen's paradise. The Fish Company from Węgorzewo stocks with fry all the lakes of our County. This is fry of: pike, eel, tench, crucian and others.
 


 
Since 1945 Węgorzewo was called „Gate to Masurian Land” - because here lead the tracks of water touristics with an international importance. The most popular track is „The Great Masurian Lakes Route”. The sailors for their needs choose the main track - which stretches from Węgorzewo to Ruciane - Nida and Nida Lake with the East branch through Sniardwy Lake, Ros Lake and the north-west branch to the Ryn Lake.



  Already before the 2 nd World War the sailing and ice-boating has developed. Also nowadays a lot of sailing sports fans come here to take part in different international sailing competitions as: International Boat-Races in which the Grand Prix is The Golden Cup of Masurian Land, International Local Authority of Węgorzewo Boat-Races, The Military Championships of Europe in Sailing (CISM) and International Ice- Cup of Swięcajty Lake in Ice-Boating.

Here you will find everything you need: silvery-watered lakes, dark and dense forests, green meadows and the unique climates of the Masurian nights.
